Small World Music Centre

The Small World Music Centre - Toronto’s World Music Hub
In early 2014, the company will enter an exciting phase of growth and community programming by occupying a new facility – the Small World Music Centre. For the first time, the organization will have an identifiable home, providing a place that Toronto’s culturally diverse music community can call home – a World Music Hub. Located at Toronto Artscape’s new YoungPlace on Shaw Street, it will be a 1,000 square foot performance space featuring professional quality staging and sound, telescopic seating to accommodate 70 people. The Centre will host intimate concerts, workshops, master classes, panel discussions, rehearsals and multimedia productions that will engage a diverse range of artists and cultural communities and take Small World into the next phase of its organizational development. The Small World Music Centre will allow the company to grow in new ways, opening up possibilities that only a dedicated physical space can. From longer-term artistic processes as a ‘creative incubator’ to small-scale performances presented with the highest production standards, the SWMC will broaden the options for artists and audiences and allow Small World to enhance its educational outreach and community engagement. The Centre will advance culturally diverse music in terms of profile, artistic quality, collaborative innovation and as an essential bridge builder between communities

The Virtual Concert Hall

Fundamental to the vision of the SWMC is the Virtual Concert Hall – a state-of-the-art video and audio capture facility. While the Centre will excel at engaging small numbers of people, the VCH will enable us to take what we do to a virtually limitless audience in the digital and broadcast realm, giving Small World’s activities a lasting legacy and deepening our engagement with our constituencies. With multi-camera high definition capture and multi-track digital audio recording capabilities, the VCH will function on multiple levels: It will take SWMC programming ‘beyond the four walls’ of the space; it will build the Small World brand exponentially online and possibly in broadcast format, increasing its attraction to corporate sponsors; it will provide career-building collateral to artists in terms of video content that can be used for their own promotion; and it will create a lasting resource base of material, enabling continued enjoyment and learning from the innovative programs taking place.
