Last Saturday’s Voices of Asia concert lived up to all expectations. A superb example of the good things that can happen when the right combination of talent comes together, even for a short time. Both the participants and audience were clearly moved by the joy of creating and sharing music.
This weekend, the Asian Music Series continues with a CD release concert by Dorjee Tsering. Given the recent tragic events in the region it will be especially poignant to celebrate Tibetan culture abroad. Dorjee has devoted his artistic life to preserving and promoting the music of his homeland here in Canada. His new recording takes that music into the 21st Century in a nuanced, respectful mix of old and new. We’re eagerly anticipating his performance at the Small World Centre.
The following night, on Sunday at Lula Lounge, electronica and grooves take centre stage. kLoX, the combination of Gurpreet Chana and Mason Bach, bring tabla rhythms together with soaring violin lines, mediated by technology. The results are sonically expansive soundscapes that have won them eager fans. They share the evening with Snowday, a local collective that present live ambient music. DJ medicineman is also on the bill, so sweet grooves are a given.
