Circling Sounds

Nov 22, 2016

The Circle Band plays the Small World Centre Saturday to celebrate its 5th anniversary. It’s a group that’s close to our hearts, as it features Small World’s celebrated sound technician Reza Moghaddas on bass. With four recordings under their collective belt, their music style is a unique combination of Persian poetry with jazz, acoustic rock and Middle Eastern sounds. Led by singer, songwriter and guitar player Shahab Baradaran, with Saman Shahi on keyboards and tar, Peter Lutek (wind instruments), Steve Farrugia (drums), they’re a name to watch.

Next week, we’re looking forward to the December edition of Globetrotter. With two names generating a lot of buzz on the global electronica scene – CloZee and Psymbionic, it’s shaping up to be a memorable night.

Tonight at Lula Lounge, it’s a great combination with David Buchbinder’s Odessa/Havana and Bret Higgins’ Atlas Revolt. Celebrating the 2016 release of Atlas Revolt’s debut CD and the upcoming release of Odessa/Havana’s third, this special concert brings together two of the only Canadian bands on John Zorn’s iconic Tzadik label. Hard-hitting musical fireworks guaranteed!

Korean Sounds On Stage!

Nov 16, 2016

Having been fortunate enough to attend the Asia Pacific Music Meeting in Ulsan recently, I’ve been witness to some of the exciting music coming out of Korea. The country is interested in raising the profile of the innovative artists working there.

Coreyah certainly fits the bill, combining traditional instruments with modern approach and attitude. The band is on a mission: ‘The root of our music is Korean tradition, but we hope that it can appeal to everyone.’ This modest vision statement belies their exceptional artistry and extraordinary ability to connect with an audience. You have two opportunities to see their Toronto debut on Saturday at 5:00 & 8:00.

Beyond Toronto, the place to be for Canada’s world music enthusiast this week is Mundial Montreal where the 6th edition of this international networking and showcase event takes place. A selection of some the best and brightest on the global scene will be there along with presenters, movers, shakers and music fans.

Passion, Innovation and Ticket Contest!

Nov 09, 2016

It’s always a thrill to have the great Oliver Mtukudzi perform. The love that his fans share for him and his music comes through loud and clear! And the party goes on and on… so needless to say, we’re looking forward to Friday night at the Opera House when the great voice of Zimbabwe returns. Join us on the dance floor!

The following evening at the Small World Centre, Spaniards La Banda Morisca perform. This is a rare opportunity to experience music direct from Andalucía – including former members of the legendary Radio Tarifa, the group continues an unstoppable passion for musical experimentation. Flamenco meets Andalusí-Arabic melodies created when Muslims, Jews and Christians coexisted in southern Spain. Mediterranean passion for a Saturday night!

Next week the Centre takes us to Korea, with the Toronto debut of Coreyah. This exciting young band charts an adventurous course where traditional Korean song comes face to face with Tom Waits! It promises to be a remarkable musical experience. You can be part of it. Reply to adam@smallworldmusic.com and correctly name one Korean instrument the band uses and you will be entered into a draw to win tickets!

soundscapes to dance floor

Nov 02, 2016

Tomorrow night at the Small World Centre, a remarkable pair of Montreal-based musicians perform a night of transportive sounds. Thomas Carbou and Patrick Graham blend custom 8-string guitar and an array of percussion, hypnotic vocals, spontaneous improvisation and looping, to create both ecstatic groove pieces and dream-like soundscapes.

The weekend sees the return of our Globetrotter series after a summer hiatus. We’re pleased to feature the debut party for Orient Art, recognized internationally for a lush and sensual sound merging traditional and modern electronic sounds. Of course, resident DJ medicineman will bring his unique mix to the dance floor as well.

Next weekend it’s the return of the great Oliver Mtukudzi at the Opera House. As well, direct from Andalucía, La Banda Morisca perform passionate Spanish music fusing their creative take on traditional repertoire.

Around town, there’s lots of great Mexican fare – from food to music at Harbourfront Centre’s Day of the Dead celebrations this weekend. Worth a visit.
