This weekend’s instalment of the
13th Annual Asian Music Series, sponsored by TD Bank, brings something unique to our program. Saturday’s
Voices of Asia concert is the culmination of a weeklong residency project in which four remarkable artists come together to share and create at the
Small World Centre. This notion of the Centre as an ‘incubator’ is key to its overall vision and we’ve already seen some great results along these lines, including
Cover me Globally last fall. Here, Suba Sankaran, Bandana Singh, Vandana Vishwas and Amely Zhou – all of whom have flourishing careers on their own – combine talents with the support of Dylan Bell and Ed Hanley, to showcase songs and stories of Asian Canadian women. The Autorickshaw video below deals powerfully with some hard stories from India – the song ‘City of Lakes’ will be reinterpreted by the group this weekend, so there’s lots to look forward to.As we move into May, the Series looks to Tibet with the CD release concert of
Dorjee Tsering. His new music moves Tibetan traditional sounds into the 21st Century, propelled by Dorjee’s soulful voice and great production values. The following night, on Sunday the 3rd, Lula Lounge hosts
Klox & Snowday – an evening featuring table-driven electronica and more by two innovative groups. DJ medicineman rounds it out.
Much more on tap through the month of May, as you’ll see below!
