Asian Music Series Highlight Kayhan Kalhor & Alireza Ghorbani, Tinariwen & More

We’re pleased to announce that tickets are now on sale for the May 14th concert by one of Iran’s most significant artists. The great kamancheh player Kayhan Kalhor returns with singer Alireza Ghorbani. It’s been our pleasure to work with Kayhan on numerous occasions over the years and a thrill to watch his career soar,  not just in the Persian classical field, but with bold collaborations in various genres. This will be a highlight of our 15th Asian Music Series, supported by TD Bank.

More immediately, the series continues this weekend following a sold-out kick-off event with Haniya Aslam and friends. Friday we move east to Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park for a night of thundering drums. The Nagata Shachu taiko group never fails to thrill, and this weekend, also marks the release of their new DVD ‘Toronto Taiko Tales.’

On Saturday it’s So Long Seven back at the Small World Centre with special guest Amara Kanté. The band encompasses folk, rock, blues and Hindustani music, and their intriguing lineup of banjo, guitar, fiddle and tabla continues to impress a growing following. We’re excitedly anticipating next Wednesday, with the return to town of a legendary force in world music. It’s been seven years since we presented Tinariwen at the Phoenix (where does the time go?). They’re finally back, this time at Massey Hall, joined on the bill by Dengue Fever. This one’s gonna rock!

Lastly, tomorrow, our friend Rob Simms, York University music professor, presents an evening in support of relief efforts for victims of the siege of Mosul. The concert of music from Iraq, Kurdistan and Turkey, performed on oud, tanbur and ney, is free with voluntary donations taken for this important cause.
